Pam Ayres on a morphine drip

Fabulous quote from Rick Broadbent in today’s Times, comparing Arsenal with Chelsea (come on you Blues!):

Arsenal are still capable of playing the most inspiring football in the Barclays Premiership, but their lack of a plan B has been the Achilles heel that has seen them founder in Europe. Chelsea, by contrast, sometimes look as though they do not know their art from their elbow and can grind out results as effectively as they can create works of beauty. Where Arsenal aspire to poetry in motion, Chelsea could be Pam Ayres on a morphine drip and still win.

Something of a backhanded compliment, but who cares. We. Are. Top of the league. Say we are top of the league!

As a longtime Tottenham Hostpur fan, seeing Arsenal plunge downward gives me considerable pleasure.

Oh, Simon, Simon. Where to begin? The 5 goals we plunged past your defence, at White Hart Lane? The fact that you haven’t won anything since the league cup? In 1999?

Still, I’m glad you can take so much joy from so much adversity. Just imagine how happy you’d be if Tottenham managed to plunge down to second? Unlikely, I guess, but hey: if results go your way this weekend, you might manage to plunge into the top half of the table.

Although few people realise that Pam Ayres was actually a spy for the British government during the cold war.

All I can say is this, Small Paul: I was at Wembley for the FA Cup Semi Final, when Gazza scored one of the most spectacular goals I have ever seen. I have a recoding of Jonathan Pierce’s Capital Gold commentary that I shall cherish forever.

What a wonderful way to sum up todays sports journalism ad
the quality of The Times by re producing this banal piece of rubbish.Prehaps we should question whether the writer shortened his name correctly.
