Not the best team in the land, not even the best team in Liverpool, but still champions of Europe. I’m not bitter.
Update: A dry explanation of the photo for my international readers. The footballer pictured is Steven Gerrard. He is captain of Liverpool Football Club, but more importantly he is actually from Liverpool. This makes him a scouser, which in turn makes him a thief by default (according to national stereotype), hence his being stopped by the police for carrying large piece of silverware.

Oh come now. This team, however poor you may think they are, defeated Juve over two legs, defeated some English team I’ve never really heard of over two legs, and came back from a three goal deficit against Milan. It is hardly unbelievable that a team who can do that should be European Champions, now is it?
What’s unbelievable is that the appalling Everton managed 4th in the league.
And no, I’m not a Liverpool fan.

I am a Liverpool fan – http://www.cityofsound.com/blog/2005/05/gerrard_superst.html – and would fully agree that while we’re not the best team in the land, we are the best in Europe. And that says it all about the irrational incomprehensible delirious wonderment that is football :)

But Guy, you just summed up why Liverpool’s win was so unbelievable. Liverpool ended up with little more than half the number of points of Chelsea over a year of Premiership and yet they managed to come back from 3–0 down against a Milan playing superbly well. Astonishing, and all credit to them. You gotta love this game.

I can’t believe it either. They spent the whole season being erratic in the league, getting knocked out of the domestic cups and squeaking through CL rounds, and then pull off the greatest turn-around anyone can remember. But, like you, I am just jealous. As a Newcastle fan I’d like to know what it feels like to win anything, let alone the big one.
Still, at least we’re going with win the Ashes. Oh no, my mistake…

Listen, I’m from Liverpool and I don’t care what yoose all say because the European Cup, which is our’s to keep, will now take pride of place in the multi-strory trophy room, beautifully presented (on bricks with its wheels off!).

They earnt that trophy through shear guts and detmination.

What was also ‘unbelievable’ was the decision given in the Chelsea game when the linesman gave a goal wich on any angle seen certainly wasn’t deserved.

Everton weren’t ‘appalling’ by any stretch of the imagination. They got to 4th place by BEATING poor teams and deserved their standing. Points don’t lie and Liverpool were truely shambolic the majority of the season.
Personally I don’t think UEFA should have changed their ruling but I guess I would say that being an Everton fan :)
